It’s the time of year where we are often singing the praises of Meal Prep. And why wouldn’t we? It’s a great way to streamline your week if you’re too busy to cook meals throughout.
That being said…How many times have you been excited about a recipe on Monday just to be absolutely sick of it before Thursday even rolls around? And then find yourself tossing it aside and grabbing fast food anyways. Which completely ruins the point!
We have tons of resources on Meal Prep you can find here, but for today we’re taking a step over to ingredient prep as an easy alternative to meal prep that still frees up valuable space in your week.
What is Ingredient Prep?
What is it?
Ingredient prep means you are preparing the foods you can use throughout the week to create your meals as you go or even just easy and accessible snacks. It won’t quite be grab and go like traditional meal prep, but it also means you won’t be eating the same things all week long.
It does take some creativity and the ability to mix and match ingredients based on what you know you like, but if you can find a few recipes that share ingredients, all you need is 1-2 proteins, a few greens and vegetables, plus a grain option, and you’re ready to go!
Why Ingredient Prep?
Why should you incorporate it in your weekly routine?
- Save time. This is, of course, always the first priority at MOD. Time is a precious resource, and in an already busy week, if you can win back even 30 minutes a day for yourself, it’s worth the weekly hour up front. (Or, better yet, the hour a week you have your personal assistant doing the prepping for you!).
- Save money. No more watching your fruit and veggies go bad in the fridge waiting to be washed/cut/cooked while you order DoorDash because you didn’t have enough time or energy to cook. When you already have a plan and everything ready to execute it, cooking becomes so much more doable.
- Encourage everyone to make heathy choices with ease. If you have an array of healthy snacks ready to go in the fridge for in-between meals (think sliced fruits and veggies, hard boiled eggs, pasta or bean salads, etc.) it’ll be much easier for the whole family to choose those healthier options on busy days.
What Ingredients Can I Prep?
What kind of foods should you prep?
- Vegetables:
- Dicing and chopping onions (or pickling them from scratch!)
- Roasting sweet potatoes
- Washing and cutting up broccoli or cauliflower
- Proteins:
- Batch cook proteins like chicken breast, ground beef, etc.
- Another great option is to prepare some marinated protein options that can be ready to cook throughout the week.
- Hard boiled eggs are a great breakfast and snack option that are easy to make at the beginning of the week.
- Bean salads are another great batched option and they only gets better as they marinate throughout the week.
- Grains:
- Pre-cook rice or quinoa as a base for meals
- Pasta salads can be made separately at the beginning of the week and assembled when you’re ready for lunch.
- Seasonings and Dressings
It is important to keep in mind how long each item stays good in the fridge once cooked or prepped. One easy way to keep track is to take a page from the professionals and label each bag or Tupperware container with the preparation date and how many days it should last. On average, most items will stay good for 3-5 days in the fridge, and of course longer in the freezer.
