It’s hard enough to keep a clean house, and even harder to keep a clean car—especially if you’re always on the go and have little ones sharing the backseat.
That’s why we’ve compiled a straightforward guide to help you organize your car without adding unnecessary clutter (accompanied by a helpful video on our YouTube channel!). Our goal is to keep things simple and focus on what’s absolutely necessary without buying things just to buy them. So let’s dive into the essentials to make your car a comfortable, clean, and organized space that you can enjoy every single day.
Trunk Organization:
- “Invest” in a trunk organizer for efficient storage.
- This doesn’t necessarily mean buying an organizer. Consider using laundry baskets or items you already have for general organization.
- If you don’t regularly use the final row of seats, look into options like a Hanging Trunk Organizer or Collapsible Trunk Organizer for added convenience.
Car Trash Can:
- Everyone has trash in their cars, but cars unfortunately don’t come with trashcans.
- Try using a dedicated car trash can to keep things clean!
- Check out options like this Car Trash Can or this Mini Car Trash Can for a compact solution.
Middle Console Essentials:
- Stock your middle console with necessities you might need while out and about.
- Store them in small containers or bags to keep your console tidy.
- Include things like Lysol wipes, hand sanitizer, tissues, a Tide pen, Advil, chapstick, and extra cash.
Seat protection for Kids and Pets:
- If you have kids and/or pets but want to keep your back seat clean, try seat protectors like this Dog Car Seat Cover or this Waterproof Car Seat Cover.
- It’s also a good idea to pack a bundle of towels because you never know when they’ll spill or splash in something you don’t want all over your car.
Additional items for kids:
- Don’t get caught out and about with your kids, but without the necessities.
- Include items that are relevant to where you and your kids are in life right now.
- Bring snacks, water bottles, activities, a headrest tablet holder, extra clothes, a first aid kit, diapers, bottles, wipes, and plastic bags for possible carsickness.
- These are great items to always keep in your trunk organizer!
Handheld Vacuum:
- Invest in a handheld vacuum for your car or garage.
- Check out these options for easy maintenance:

- Vacuum Option #2
- Vacuum Option #3
Cleaning Routine:
- Establish a routine for cleaning high-touch surfaces on a regular basis to keep germs, dirt, and mess managed.
- Focus on door handles, the steering wheel, gear shift, dashboard, cupholders, middle console, window buttons, and radio controls.
- Find ways to incorporate this routine into your daily life for a consistently clean car! By having cleaning items on hand in your car or garage you’ll make it easier to give things a wipe down on a regular basis.
Deep Clean and Detail:
- Consider scheduling a quarterly deep clean and detail on a more thorough maintenance schedule—either schedule with a local company or prepare to maintain it yourself.
- If you plan on doing it yourself, use tools like q-tips for small spots of dust, lint rollers, a Portable Carpet Cleaner, Car Cleaning Gel, and Microfiber Cloths for a comprehensive clean every few months.
So if you’re looking to organize your car, and keep it that way check out these suggestions! But remember that our goal is to help you organize by simplifying, not by throwing more things at the problem. The real solutions present themselves when you take stock of your personal situation and implement the changes that are most helpful for you and your family during your current stage of life.
